What Do You Eat on New Year's Day?

I grew up thinking everyone in the country ate the same thing on New Year's Day.  It was (embarrassingly) recently that I realized depending on where you grew up & what culture your family hails from effects what your traditional New Year's fare may be.

Here in our area known for it's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage our meal of choice is pork & sauerkraut.  Add a side of mashed potatoes & you have the New Year's Day meal.

My pork loin & sauerkraut cooked slowly overnight in my crock pot & when we get home from church I'll be whipping up some mashed potatoes.

What will you be eating today?

  1. LOL- I thought when I read your title that you were talking about diet foods. And I thought ah, man, I really should start eating clean today instead of tomorrow- lol.
I have never heard of the pork thing- sounds good. We are eating leftover appetizers from last night and spaghetti and meatballs tonight!
    Happy New Year!

  2. I have some Pennsylvania Dutch relatives in my heritage, and they often had pork and saurkraut. My husband has a strong dislike for kraut, and so we usually just have beef.

Today was potluck dinner at our church.........so we had a large variety. :)

  3. When I grew up it was always black-eyed peas for good luck in the new year...or tamales

I seem to let the ball drop on New Years since I shift gears from Christmas to three birthdays the first week of January, well I let this holiday slide when it comes to food

Fun post...and congratulations on your weight loss...you do so great this year...not me..gotta go at it again this year
